Yitzhak KhabinskySubject: open file dialog from network share
Author: Yitzhak Khabinsky

Hello,

I'm trying to open XSL file from the network share via File Open dialog window.
First, File Open doesn't show any file and there are many out there.
Second, when I type manually file name and click "open" I'm getting an error message.

Error message is available in the attachment (screen shot as a *.gif file).

We have Windows 2000 network
Stylus Studio v 4.0 Beta build 084.
The same behavior was with the previous version (build 083).

Regards,
Yitzhak Khabinsky

There is a known problem with the IShellFolder objects that could have
caused this behavior: that is, the shell doesn't behave properly when you
directly type in a complete path like \\Pstc\Imgt_dev01\beta\xsl (so you
get empty directory listings and "file not found" messages).
The only workaround currently available is to either navigate step by step
from Network Neighborhood down to the desired directory, or type in a path
like \\Pstc and then navigate from that.

Hope this helps,

Alberto

The following Microsoft article might help:
PRB: IShellFolder::GetDisplayNameOf Returns Names with GUIDs (Q198871)

Yitzhak,
we haven't replied to your recent emails yet because we are still trying
to reproduce the problems you are describing (things work fine on our
machines here at eXcelon, so we are trying to re-create a configuration
which replicates what you have described).

Thanks for the pointer to the MS article; we were aware of it.

We'll let you know when we find out something or if we need some more help
from you to understand and fix the problem.

Thanks,
Minollo

I think I should elaborate a little bit more.

I'm navigating to the directory by using a mouse. So in the File Open dialog in the 'Look in:'
- My Network Places
- Entire Network
- Microsoft Windows Network
- Pstc (which is workgroup name)
- Imgt_dev01 (Win2K server name)
- beta (network share name)
- xsl (directory name)

At this point no single file shows up.
So far so good.
If I change 'Files of type:' to All files (*.*) files names become visible but file size is equal to zero for all files.
If I click 'Open' now I am getting an error.

I forgot to mention some extra details.

Files on the network share shows up without extensions. So in case where I have two files with the same name, one being fafa.xml and another fafa.xsl, Stylus always opens just *.xml file. XSL files are impossible to open!

Hi Yitzhak,
I think I have found the problem: do you have the setting "hide extension
for known file types" on? This because we use the shell functions to browse
the network, and the name we get back when this setting is on does not have
the XML or XSL extension.
I am fixing this problem (as well as the 0-size problem) so that this
setting will not affect us anymore, but in the meanwhile, as a workaround,
you can disable it.

Hope this helps,

Alberto

Thanks for the idea of turning on visibility of file extensions. It worked, now I can see them. I think Stylus should always show file extensions regardless of Windows Explorer settings.

The problem still exists.
- File size 0 KB
- Error message is still popping up

It is possible that error message is somehow related to files being in read-only mode. You can test out this scenario.
But the same error happens with files which are not in read-only mode.

Yitzhak Khabinsky

We have just made 4.0 Beta BL84b available. It fixes the problems you
mentioned.
You can find it on:
http://www.stylusstudio.com/beta

Thanks for helping us fix this problem,
Minollo

I just downloaded and installed SS latest version 084b. Thanks a lot for taking care.

As I see there are multiple fixes:
- file extensions are visible now
- file size is not 0 KB anymore
- File Open dialog 'remembers' now last opened directory (you probably got tired, as all of us do, to navigate again and again to deeply nested directories)

But I am still getting an irritating error message. The same like before. When I click 'ok' Stylus is loading file without any problem.

So it looks like you are almost there to fix the issue.

Yitzhak Khabinsky

Yitzhak,
I can only think of only one scenario that is compatible with all the
informations you gave us and the code base of Stylus bl84b. That is, you
are using the Open File dialog to select the file
\\Imgt_dev01\beta\xsl\states.xsl (notice: STATES.XSL). The file is found,
and the Open File dialog is dismissed. The XSLT module opens the editor,
then tries to load the XML file associated to the current scenario (in the
first case, STATES.XML), but it cannot be found in the
\\Imgt_dev01\beta\xsl directory (maybe did you move the XML files in a
\\Imgt_dev01\beta\xml directory?). In any case the XSL file is already
opened, with the schema pane on the right empty.

Can you confirm that you were using the Open File dialog to find and open
an XSL file and the error messages always referred to an XML file?

Alberto

Bingo.
You are just great.

Here is what I was doing:

- I'm using File Open dialog.
- All the time I'm trying to open single *.xsl file.

As you correctly mentioned, *.xsl file is trying to load corresponding *.xml file based on the scenario which is commented at the bottom of the *.xsl file.

Thanks again,
Yitzhak Khabinsky
