If I am trying to go from HL7 message to XML why do i first have to convert the message to a generic xml structure? Cant I go directly from the file to the target XSD?

What is the target structure? The job of the converter is to take
something - in this case HL7 - and convert it to an equivalent XML
form so that generic transformation tools can be used.
There are lots of good tools for manipulating XML, but not so many
for EDI.
So for this reason, the converter does a 'simple' mapping of the HL7
file to something that can be transformed. Now, XQuery and XSLT are
excellent tools for rearranging data, so instead of making a converter
that does it all, with a high learning curve, we opted to make the
converters 'transparent' and use more generic technology to do the
mapping.
The XML Converter will always produce XML that matches the schema we
generate from the same repository, so you don't need to do anything
there. We've done that part. It's what you want to do next that's
up to you.

One other question. When you say HL7 to XML to HL7, what are you
doing between the start and end that's different? Knowing what you're
trying to accomplish might help.

Sorry i wasnt clear... Yeah i will take in a message in HL7 and convert it to XML for processing. Many days later when a response is made it will be converted back to HL7 EDI....

I need to look at your opther reposnes it seems my only issue right now is that i need to get those "Z" segments added to the repository. I can use the XML that stylus produces.
