Karthik SSubject: Support for xsl created from wordml using inference tool
Author: Karthik S

We are creating word documents using the wordml approach. Following are the steps carried out,

1• Create an xml file to create the report template

2• Open this xml file in word and apply the formatting for the static part of the document which does not involve any business logic (like adding header, footer, page number etc)

3• Save the xml file after unselecting "Save data only" option

4• Run the inference tool(for word 2003) to convert the xml to xsl file

5• Open the xsl file generated by the inference tool and add all the business logic (like dynamic generation of tables) at appropriate places of the xsl document. This business logic will be used to fetch the data from the xml file (which acts as the data store).

6• Then finally in the C# code the Transform method is applied using the xsl and xml files to get the final report in word 2003. To get the output report in doc format, the extension of the output file is mentioned as doc.

Step 5 is very difficult in the above approach because the xsl file generated by the inference tool generates a lot of code and it becomes very difficult to identify approprite places for writing the business logic. The maintainability of the code becomes very poor.

Does stylus studio make the xsl edting easy in the xsl generated by the inference tool?

Hi Karthik,
I haven't used the XSL inference tool, so I haven't seen an example of the generated code; however, once you open the XSL in Stylus Studio, and run it against an XML file, you can use the backmapping functionality to find out which part of the XSL was responsible for generating the output you have placed the cursor on. On a side node, have you looked at the XML Report functionality of Stylus Studio?

Thanks Alberto.

The xsl file generated by the inference tool will contain wordml tags, hope backmapping functionality is supported for wordml tags also.

Can you please give some idea on XML Report functionality?

Hi Karthik,
the backmapping functionality is independent from the language being generated by the XSLT stylesheet; every piece of tag being generated is tied to the instruction of the stylesheet being executed.
As for XML Report, it provides you a canvas where you can place tables, list, images, fixed text as well as dynamic expressions computed on the content of the source document, loops, conditions and so on. Once designed, the report can be used to generate an XSLT stylesheet that will generate an output in either HTML or XSL-FO (and, hence, PDF). But by reading your message again, I am under the impression that you want to have your stylesheet generate WordML tags, so XML Report is probably not the right tool for you.
