Subject:generate xml file on web server Author:Simon Meneely Date:31 Jan 2006 04:09 AM
Hi,
I have been trying your product, StylusStudio, viewing your videos, documentation and forums ... staggering program, but
is it possible to create an xml file that generates itself on the server from a datasource (MSsql) on the server?
I thought I would be able to do this with Stylus Studio but it seems that you have to execute the query from within the program in order generate the xml. I would like to set up an automated system for specific data feeds which update themselves.
If I am missing something really obvious I apologize (new to xml) but I would really like to know how to do this? Can I do this with StylusStudio?

Stylus Studio is the development environment, but you can deploy the
pieces you build.
But it all depends on your environment. You said you wanted to take
data from MSSQL. What web server do you use? Which XSLT engine are
you planning to use? Or do you plan to use XQuery? Are you trying to
extract data using SQL/XML? What are you ultimately trying to
accomplish?

Hi Tony,
OK, Bearing in mind that I am dipping my toe in the water with this:
I have come to Stylus Studio via Dreamweaver, and then InteraktOnline who have a useful RSS Writer applet which allows me to generate RSS feeds from an ASP page (or other).
Steps are as follows:
1 - Community News and other information is on MSSQL database on Windows server
2 - My Asp page queries the Database and the XML is generated as a string by the extension.
3 - Other members of my virtual communities can then draw down the news, (and news combinations for use on their reader or on their web sites), but it is alway via an asp page rather than directly from an xml file.
4 - I am able to modify the Interakt extension to include an XSLT fragment which I can build in Dreamweaver 8. This I am using to make a more friendly link to the XSLT content when they left click on the XML or RSS button, basically to explain what RSS / XML is and so forth to users of the communities, and to send them to find out more, or to give them instructions about using RSS Readers etc.
5 - I was looking into generating an xml file directly, and also into other possiblities which I will go into if you are following me so far?
I am working on a work around using the above and should have it up for tomorrow and can send you a link?

Just as you generate HTML, you can generate XML.
We'd be happy to take a look at what you are doing.
