I have the latest version (6.1) of Stylus Studio. For some reason the repaints are painfully slow. Each time I open a new file or bring the program to the foreground after it's been in the backgroun it takes a long time to repaint the icons and give me mouse control.
I've installed it on my laptop which also runs XP and it performs fine. What types of things could be causing this? All the other applications on the same machine paint quickly.

Are some of the documents open in Stylus Studio accessed through a network
connection? That may slow down things significantly, as Stylus Studio
checks if documents has been modified externally when it regains focus.
You can change that behavior unchecking the "Automatically check for
externally modified files" checkbox in Tools | Options > Application Settings

No, all the files are local. The slowness is with the GUI. Each time I bring
Stylus Studio to the front it very slowly repaints the buttons and menus. I can
see the file contents already there but I don't get mouse control until all the
painting is finished. I installed the most recent upgrade this morning and it
does seem a tad faster but still way too slow.
