Lee HumphriesSubject: Annoyance: Really slow refresh status with VSS
Author: Lee Humphries

I've just tried bundling together a number of XSLTs and XSDs (roughly 100) into a project. All the XSLTs and XSDs were already in VSS.

When I tried doing a "Source Control-Refresh Status" it took minutes to come back.

When I tried shutting down SS and restarting it took absolutely forever to come up. I tried this a few times and the timing was consistent.
Worst of all the SS splash screen was on top of everything the entire time, and of course I couldn't move it out of the way to work on other things while waiting for SS to finish starting up and loading the project.
Could you at least get the splash screen to go away after 5 seconds (rather than 5 minutes)?

I have just tried putting 116 files under Visual Source Safe 6, and the
refresh time was under a second; do you have them in different directories?
or is the server on a different host?

It is already waiting just a few seconds; but the VSS operation is not
multithreaded, so it's keeping SS frozen.

All the files are in one physical directory, although I did try putting them in several project folders.

The VSS repository is on a different server.

Lee,
the cause for the slowness is probably the network; when I tried moving the
repository on another computer the time to refresh a project with ~110
files went from 1 to 15 seconds (but I am using a 100 Mb/s Ethernet network).
In the next Stylus Studio update there will be an optimization that will
reduce the network traffic, lowering the time I see on my test setup to 3
seconds.
Let us know if the situation improves on your side too.

Thanks,
Alberto

Thanks - Apart from the inconvenience of it, the length of time that the Stylus splash screen is fixed firmly over the top of everything is a source of much sarcasm from my co-workers. In other words - it definitely doesn't make Stylus look good.

I love Stylus Studio, but the splash screen makes me want to use someone else's product. Please create a toggle, for at very least registered users, so that they don't have the most important part of their screen obscure by an advertisement for a product that they already paid for. Thank you.

This seems to be posted in an odd context?

Anyway, the splash screen is just an introductory image displayed while the application starts up; many (most?) Windows applications do the same. I'm not sure I see the harm?

I agree on the incorrect context, but I was responding to an earlier post.

The harm is one where my company's employees are forced to wait 5 seconds (more depending upon CPU and/or network load) to continue their work every time they start Stylus. The busier they are, the longer they have to wait. Often, I get emails that have an XML/XSL attachment, but need to read the text, also. I have Stylus open XML as default, so I have to wait for the program to finish loading before being able to continue seeing the whole email. This is, of course, just one example. Having purchased a multi-user license for thousands of dollars, a company shouldn't have to pay a 5-15 second advertisement tax, in addition.

The splash screen shouldn't cause a delay in the application startup (it happens in parallel), but I can see it being annoying if you frequently start the application to see small files, especially on a fast machine.

Anyway, as the last thing we want to do is to be annoying to our own users, we are adding an option to make it possible to disable the splash screen display.

Thanks.

Thank you very much. You really do have a great product, which we chose over a number of other offerings.
