Andreas PolzSubject: converting flat file to xml via xslt?
Author: Andreas Polz

Hello eŽbody!

for a specific project i would like to use xslt to import data from flat files (not html but delimited or fixed length records) to xml. do you see a chance here?

furthermore the customer would like to be able to edit/create the specific xslt templates by using a wizard - i see that stylus can do that for html input files, but is that also possible for flat files?

tnx in advance
Andreas Polz

At the best of my knowledge there is no "standard" to convert a flat file
into XML; while there is (XHTML) for HTML. That's why Stylus Studio has a
wizard to convert HTML into XML.

That said, another thing that I would try if I were you is the "XML from
ADO" wizard in Stylus; I'm pretty sure that there is a way to convince ADO
to use a flat file as a "tabular" source of data; once that's done, ADO
will convert it to XML for you.

Hope this helps,
Minollo

Another possibility is to use the XConnect package that is available when
you buy the entire XML suite (XIS 3.5), that has GUI tools specifically
designed to convert data (flat files, Excel spreadsheets, COBOL data files,
etc..) into XML.

We actually license our XConnects technology from a company called Data
Junction. You can actually download a fully-functional 30-day
evaluation copy from their website at http://www.datajunction.com. It
handles over 100 different formats and is relatively inexpensive (less
than $1000) for a single-user license.

Hope this helps,
Chris

I have been doing EDI file conversions/transformations from flat file to xml for the last couple of months.
I have found the process to be three steps using three different tools:
1. Data junction content extractor tool is used to produce an 'extract' of the flat file that you want to convert. This produces a .djp file.
2. Next, try using the Data junction map designer tool to map your extract file (produced from 1 above). This process produces an XML extract of the map and a spec file with an extension of .djs.
3. Finally, using Stylus Studio you can map your XML from step 2 to your final XML.

I have had success with this technique for flat-file to XML and vice versa (although the technique is slightly easier and has fewer steps).
