What do you mean? Variables can be part of XPath expressions, like in "$myVar > 5" or "/a/b[. = $myVar]", or "/a/*[local-name() = $myVar]", or...

Sorry for the poor explanation. I include an example below to show what I am trying to achieve.

I would like to use my varaible to get the Milk node.

<?xml version='1.0'?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

<xsl:template match="/">

<xsl:variable name="myVar">/Items/Item/Milk</xsl:variable>

<xsl:value-of select="$myVar"/>

</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

That looks like valid XSLT, and the xsl:value-of instruction is going to output the value of your $myVar variable...

BTW, I think you want to change...

<xsl:variable name="myVar">/Items/Item/Milk</xsl:variable>

...into...

<xsl:variable name="myVar" select="/Items/Item/Milk"/>
