There are several ways. You can use the Document Wizards under the
File menu, or you can open the XSD, right-click on the root node, and
choose the option to generate an instance. It will give you a preview
window, which you can then open as a stand-alone document.

I wanted to do the same thing. It came back immediately with a document that was a partial XML sample and which fails the validate correctly. If I kept it running, it never came back and seemed to take all the memory of my machine (1Gbyte) and Struzzo because non-responsive and I had to kill it. So this capability seems to be fairly limited. What are the limitations?

The main limitation you are hitting is size and complexity of the original XML Schema; if you ask Stylus Studio to generate an XML instance as complete as possible for a specific XML Schema, and the XML Schema is relatively complex (like it could be the XHTML one, for example, where many structures can be referenced by many others and recursively by themselves), the result will be potentially huge. That's why Stylus Studio stops after generating a few thousand elements and asks you if it should keep going.
You can control many of the aspects of the automatic XML generation by tweaking the settings in Tools > Options > XML Schema Editor > XML Schema to XML
The other main limitation you may find in the XML Schema to XML wizard is the limited capability in generating valid values for data on which complex/composite facets are defined. Also, in some cases even the "documentation" that Stylus Studio outputs (which causes comments and whitespaces) may end up making the document not valid.

Several elements have recursion. I set the recursion depth to 2 but it still seems to do significant recursion. Perhaps it isn't properly detecting the recursion. Anyway after 32000 elements it seems lost in recursion and fails to fill in other elements that are required in the schema. It seems to me it should do a breadth first pass on the schema before it does a depth pass. This would require it to have a number of xml fragments at the same time, but should be doable. There seems to be no way to control this in this version of Stylus. When I stop it it has incomplete elements and can't be validated.

David,
can you share your XML Schema with us so that we can better understand what's going on, and see if we can find any solution to your problem? (you can email it at stylus-field-report@progress.com if you prefer)
As I mentioned, the XML Schema to XML functionality won't always be able to generated *valid* XML documents; that's the "target" of the functionality, but not its ultimate goal. Still, we would like to understand better what's going on in your case.

Basically Stylus Studio isn't detecting the recursion. It is relatively hidden. The element <Purpose> has <OrderRequest> which has <Procedures> which has <Procedure> which has <Products> which has <Product> which has <Reaction> which has <Interventions> which has <Intervention> which has <Procedures> which has <Procedure> which has <Products> which has <Product> ... and we are off to the races. I stop at 32000 elements and it has a number of levels of recursion without realizing it. Suggestions would be appreciated.
