It's always harmless to leave it in the expression, the interesting question
is, under what circumstances is it safe to remove it?

For example,

self::node()/abcd

can safely be rewritten

child::abcd

but

self::node()/(.+5)

can't safely be rewritten as (.+5) because you lose the check that the
context item is a node.
