If you are using xslt1 then it's harder: you need to write a recursive function that splits off one letter at a time and then looks up its number. This is feasible if you only need ascii input, but if you need to be able to lookup arbitrary uniocde strings it is not really feasible and you should look to see if your system has an extension function for this.
