See to it that only those nodes are selected for processing. position() returns the position of the node in the "current node list", which includes all the nodes selected to be processed with this one. If it's impossible or impractical to select just the set of nodes you want, and you have no choice but to filter further with an xsl:if or xsl:when, there are workarounds to get the same effect without position(), often by checking along the preceding-sibling:: axis.
