> (position()=last()-2='A') I have difficulty guessing what you might intend this to mean. position() and last() return numbers, so position()=last()-2 will be either true or false depending on those values, but it will never be the string 'A' Actually XSLT will cast the string 'A' to the boolean true (as it is not empty) but that is unlikely to be what you intended. Since I can't guess what this is supposed to do, I can;t suggest any alternative.
