Getting the root element.

[This is a repost, as I think my mail server has chewed up the first one. If
it is being caused by a major delay my end, I oppologies]

Hi all,

This is probably quite simple, but my usual method seems to have failed (I
would include it but my IDE has crashed and is not coming back to life :-(

Q:
When deep within the structure (In my case recursing down a branch) what it
the most elegent way of getting the document root node?
