Thanks Jim. Between your response and Michael Kay's I managed to make it work. What you suggested was a pretty elegant solution, I just need to make sure that TABLE is addressed using ../../TABLE because my context node is 2 levels down from TABLE. (Kay's suggestion)
both @id and @col_id refer to ITEM, if you write it in the above way, so you have to use current():
ITEM[@id = current()/@col_id]
current() refers to the current context node (here D_ID). Then you don't need the variable.
