A bit more specific than the first description but still very under
specified, Where does it run in relation to any other code, and where
(if anywhere) does it do an effective apply-templates to hand on
control. Your example taks of adding attributes, but these can only be
added after an elemnt node has operned so it would seem that you want to
call this "automagic" template somewhere in the middle of other
templates after a literal result element start.

However if you just always want to call it first you can do that by
making a new stylesheet that imports the original one and has one
template that looks like

<xsl:template match="*">
<xsl:call-template name="foobar/>
<xsl:apply-imports/>
</xsl;template>
