XSLT 1.0 does not. XSLT 1.1 will, by removing the
distinction between node-set and result tree fragment.
Vendors of XSLT processors, and not-quite-XSLT processors (MSXML),
might offer more options.

The safest answer is to use an extension function.
It is not practical in XSLT 1.0.
I would probably attempt it anyway, though. For example,
if you just want the number of days in a given month (1-12),
it would be something like this...
<xsl:variable name="month" select="6"/>
<xsl:variable name="days" select="number(substring('312831303130313130313031',$month * 2 - 1,2))"/>
(not accounting for leap years)
