I've looked at your given stylesheet with interest. 
I'm not sure if the approach using key() is promising.
So - at the end my update of the merging tool (posted earlier this morning)
works without using keys.

However - it's an interesting idea. Nobody will stop you finding an 
alternative approach! :-)
