Fully illegal, unless you want to try CDATA and output escaping messes.

Why is it robust? You want selected, use selected="1" . That should work
in any browser I can think of, And I /specialize/ in troubleshooting
browser quirks.

As usual, all bets are off for IE3.00x on the Mac. I put money on IE2
and Lynx tho'...
