Which is exactly what I need, a running total (balance to date)!
(but in the body of the document rather than in the header as your example
showed) 

The usage is just as my bank statement shows
(page 1)
Date  withdraw  deposit  amount
1/1/00  chq 124               100
...

(page 2)
Balance at (date)   amount (250)
Date withdraw deposit  amount
1/2/00             cash      200

etc

The 'balance at (date) amount (250)' line
I was hoping to have calculated by a mix of xslt / xsl.
