MYSTAFF/MEMBER[contains(FNAME/text(), 'Nic')]

or

MYSTAFF/MEMBER[starts-with(FNAME/text(), 'Nic')]

You actually don't need the /text() bits, but it's probably marginally
faster in most implementations.

syntax and functions available.
