   And damn the language lawyers, SAXON's <assign> element would be real nice
   too.


I nearly explitly suggested in my original message that assign would
be a good candidate for something to _stay_ in a vendor specific
extension, but decided that it wasn't really fair to single out
saxon in that way:-)


While assignment might allegedly be useful in some contexts, I don't
really see how something that cuts so far across the design principles
of the language could ever really be standardised as part of the
language. Being side effect free affects the whole design and flavour of
the language. I think if you don't need or want that it is more natural
to use a different language, rather than bolt constructs from a
different paradigm on top of xsl.
