get James original version to work with XML.
    A function he uses has been 'replaced' from memory.

You're not alone, Dave. When James's XML-mode was made the default, it stomped all over the ability to use a different xml-mode (ie psgml). That was a really unpleasant thing to do, and quite unnecessary.
