Haging said that, there is one scenario where you definitely want assertions direct in your application code: this is where you want to shout out an application assumption or limitation that has no necessary connection to the data or schema. For example, that your travel-agency application does not handle red-haired people. You may decide to *also* put this redhead check into a Schematron schema, say in an application-specific phase. But application-specific release-specific limitations you want to keep and call out in the application code so that future developers can clearly see and maintain them, you don't want to hide them in another layer IMHO.
