There is only Javascript at browser-side and JSON is easier for frameworks developers. But there is no standardization in data format between frameworks which can even mix functions with data. Choose the wrong framework for your web application and you will have to rewrite it completely. JSON is worse than XML 1.0 for graphs and a new notation with its associated query language would surely help to have small autonomous databases in browsers which could even be used offline.
