You appear to be asking for a compact rewrite of

  child1 | child2 | (child1, child2) | (child2, child1)

Unfortunately, RELAX NG does not allow such compact rewrites.

Rick's suggestion (two RNG schemas, or the combination of 
an RNG and a Schematron) is the best we can do.
