Standards and conventions are both methods for stifling the imaginative
impulse on a micro level, in order to help imagination at the macro level.

A standard is essentially a formalized agreement. The meter is a standard.

A convention is gossip and tradecraft. The rule of thumb is a convention.

The foot is both a standard and a convention.

Cheers
