in an algorithmic sense could base maps be likened to shared lookup
tables/lists ? Or are they more like interim data structures to cut
out redundant processing ?

sometimes interim data structures lets one 'simplify' to a new final
structure (unlinking any dependency with the interim structres) ....
reminds me of some bright spark saying 'simplicity always follows
complexity, not the other way around'
