Events are moving quickly. Between the time I read the spec and you read
it, there have been several changes that now make well-formed HTML 5
more plausible. Previously there was no empty-element tag syntax, and
end-tags were forbidden on void elements such as img, br, and meta.

Empty-element tags are still problematic on non-void elements, and there
are some other issues; but they're just annoying, not crippling.
