For my Firefox(1.5 linux) browser seem theres no plugin. http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/vbdetect.html Vendors use Macromedia Flash to sell cars: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/index_highend.html And I dont like much how VRML render landscapes: http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/exc/excanim3_lg.jpg http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/ecs/ecs.jpg Heres how I render landscapes (not my code, trough) http://alts.homelinux.net/shots/496-0.jpg http://telejano.berlios.de/option/oz12.jpg Here is a fun thread about vrml to make a 3d mud: http://1997.webhistory.org/www.lists/www-vrml.1994/0673.html Its a 1994 thread. Here is a Slashdot post about the Second Life launch: http://games.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=68672&cid=6279378 ------------------------- I kinda hope one of these guys will succeed, but on the other hand, I'd like to see this sort of thing evolve on it's own. 5 years or so I remember there were a ton of these little virtual community type ventures using VRML.. nothing much really happened with them. Lately it seems that they're starting to crop up again. There.com, this thing, and there have a been a few others I've heard about.. activeworlds or something. I don't think the open ended virtual community stuff (as opposed to something with a "purpose" like Everquest) is going to really take off until we can really "jack-in" The idea has merit, and it WILL succeed one day, but I hope this isn't wholly sponsored by some commercial entity, but ends up being more like a 3d web (like vrml was supposed to do, right?). ------------------------- http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/23/235244 For people that as been frezzed on ice the last 5 yeas, yes.. Second Life whas sucesfull. To some people VRML seems something of the past: http://taotakashi.wordpress.com/about-tao-takashi/ The flesh hurting tagline is: "Tao Takashi is now entering Second Life as it seems a natural extension to the VRML experiments back then. Interactions are far more easily possible now, streaming is not cutting edge anymore and thus reliably working and possibilities seem infinite." *cough* VRML need to take off really fast and kick really hard to win to World of Warcraft + Second Life. I think VRML can fill a niche, but the BMV niche has been already fullfilled with flash, and the videogame morpg has been fullfilled with OpenGL/DirectX. The niche that VRML seems to fit well is web experimentation, scientific, goverment,.. Its not like that niches are big enough so I dont think the VRML plugin with X3D support will be widen support for ...welll eons. If you make a Golf game that render landscapes, your HTML render will support 100% of browser, no plugin needed, with Flash will be 9X% but VRML will be like 00.X% As a Linux user, I dont support Flash because Macromedia will discontinue the support for Linux (not Flash 9 for me), hee... maybe I can try that VRML thing.. wait, theres not plugin for Firefox on Linux. See? HTML win again. > > > >. If you use VRML, only +-40 guys around > > the world will be able to see your image.
