Writers of XSLT processors would be more inclined to take up this challenge if you didn't state upfront that you needed an xsltproc solution! Clearly this ought to work vastly better with the new string-handling capabilities in XSLT 2.0. But post the sample, and let's see what we can do with it. xsl-list might be a better forum for this than xml-dev.
