Another way to look at this is to ask if Wikipedia, a wiki ontology, or any editable source results in what is sometimes known as "the single version of the truth". Don't get too hung up on the philosophy of that, because it simply means, single source of information. While open source systems that provide spreadsheets may lessen costs, they share the same problem that ALL spreadsheet systems have: death by a thousand spreadsheets. Each one is a custom collection of data, individually tweaked, and as a result, one goes into a business meeting with the same problem musicians have without digital tuners: who is on pitch today? Some consultants now advise organizations to do away with spreadsheets or at least forbid them in meetings. It is an 'island of automation' and 'information' that by it's spiffyness has a patina of authority and accuracy as useful as Darth Vader's helmet for those metrics. How do wiki systems score performance of individual contributors and the wiki itself? I anticipate a reply based on reputation systems and PageRanking of the Wiki. On the other hand, what I am looking for is reliable audit trail, referential integrity and data integrity. What is in the chasm? len Offtopic: Digital tuners don't completely solve the problem because of the data sensor, eg, open mic or clip to the neck or plug into the jack, of these, the third works best but requires a power source and is inline or replaces the signal to the amp, so not well loved for live performance. Live, we accept the convenience of the clip on, don't use the open mic systems anymore (too much noise in the room to be reliable), and use plug systems in the studio where often, everyone is required to use the same tuner.
