The name XML was, if I recall, already making the rounds at SGML-Europe '96 which was in Munich that May. What came to be called XML was, however, little more than momentum in the context of the W3c to "standardize" a SGML paradigm (tag and entity normalized) for the Web that most of used anyway in our projects for years (to save the expense of dealing with all the baggage of SGML, validation, etc. in all our applications). The gag was that in the context of HTML/WWW and the desire (going back to the earliest moments of the WWW which it should be recalled where much motivated by want of a "poor-mans" Dynatext) to become SGMLish resulted in the choice of name as XML. Unfortunately what started off as a generic SGML subset for the Web to rally support (beyond CALS) for SGML/HyTime got sidetracked and turned (in the tradition of the rest of the Web) into a Golem for SGML/HyTime.... becoming, in effect, X for erasure of SGML/HyTime by the end of 1998 :-) -- -- Edward C.
