"Generic" markup refers to the practise of adding simple labels to ranges
of text.

"Generalized" markup refers to the practise of adding simple labels
(elements) which can themselves have metadata (attributes) to ranges of
text, according to some grammar.

Sometimes the terms "generic" is used by mistake when "generalized" is meant.

"Generic" is associated with GCA GenCoding ('67). "Generalized" is
associated with IBM's GML ('73), ISO's SGML ('86) and W3Cs XML ('96).
