People settle an area. Generations give birth and people remain there, even as
conditions change.

There was a fascinating exhibit of satellite images at the CN Tower in Toronto a
few years ago. It included photos of Africa that were taken years apart. The
images from later years had been taken after a drought and years of war. They
showed much less green and a lot more brown. There was a loss of farm land, but
poor people can't easily escape their surroundings. There was famine in
Ethiopia.
