checking two XML files against 1 schema

Hi,

say i had two xml files:

definitions.xml

...
<param name=p1 ... />
<param name=p2 ... />
...

(where name is of type ID)

displayGroups.xml

<group name=group1>
	<reference name=ref1>p1</reference>
	<reference name=ref1>p2</reference>
</group>

and i then have an XML Schema which checks (with keyref or Schematron rules)
that p1 and p2 in displayGroups.xml match up to param elements (name attr)
in definitions.xml


what is the best way of doing the schema validation over these two files?
(note: at the end of the validation i still want to have the two files
seperate, just need to link them somehow to do the validation)
