New line in attribute

I am using Xerces for parsing. My xml has an attribute with new lines.
specification="This is a test. This is a test . 

This is a test . This is a test.

This is a test. This is a test." 

On getAttribute() returns a string with new lines are stripped. How to
get the exact text with new lines?
