I've never seen that site before. I used to be aware of http://www.xmldb.org/ but as the original poster said, the domain is now for sale. The site hosted on SourceForge seems to be an archive of the old http://www.xmldb.org site. It's just as I remember it from 2 years ago right down to the fact that the latest entry on the news section of the site from 2 years ago. Also the XUpdate specification does seem to be in limbo given that the last working draft is from five years ago. Stating that the technology is abandoned and incomplete doesn't sound like FUD. It is a reasonable conclusion to come to based on the facts. -- PITHY WORDS OF WISDOM To spot the expert, pick the one who predicts the job will take the longest and cost the most. ________________________________ From: Uche Ogbuji [mailto:Uche.Ogbuji@f...] Sent: Sat 4/23/2005 5:09 PM To: Alan Gutierrez Cc: Michael Kay; 'Carmen QUINTERO'; xml-dev@l... The XML:DB pages and XUpdate page do *not* have a "domain squatter" on them, as can be proven by the simple expedient of visiting them in a browser: http://xmldb-org.sourceforge.net/ http://xmldb-org.sourceforge.net/xupdate/xupdate-wd.html See also: http://www.xmldatabases.org/projects/XUpdate-UseCases/ XUpdate is under the care of XML:DB, but it has always been understood to be applicable for any XML update needs. Do you say that XML can only be used on the Web because it is maintained by the W3C? XUpdate has never been as formalized as, say W3C specs, but then again neither has EXSLT, and I don't see many people discounting EXSLT for all that. In fact, there is a very strong parallel between XUpdate and EXSLT in terms of being simple, community driven, and generally special- interest-free, and thus sometimes scrappy and unpolished, yet always useful. As for implementations, I know of over a dozen, about half of which have nothing to do with DBMS, including the implementation in 4Suite. Again, this is a similar count to EXSLT's. XSLT has its place (I use it a lot). XUpdate has its place (I use it a lot). Let's just leave off the FUD. -- Uche Ogbuji Fourthought, Inc. http://uche.ogbuji.net http://fourthought.com http://copia.ogbuji.net http://4Suite.org Use CSS to display XML, part 2 - http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/x-dw-x-xmlcss2-i.html XML Output with 4Suite & Amara - http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2005/04/20/py-xml.html Use XSLT to prepare XML for import into OpenOffice Calc - http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/xml/library/x-oocalc/ Schema standardization for top-down semantic transparency - http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/xml/library/x-think31.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- The xml-dev list is sponsored by XML.org <http://www.xml.org>, an initiative of OASIS <http://www.oasis-open.org> The list archives are at http://lists.xml.org/archives/xml-dev/ To subscribe or unsubscribe from this list use the subscription manager: <http://www.oasis-open.org/mlmanage/index.php>
