Rick,

That XQuery survey doesn't seem to be significantly different from the approach
used
for other recent surveys.

1. BEA commisioned IDG Research to report on SOA adoption in January-February
2005. They developed the data for the report by surveying InfoWorld readers and
received 692 responses, with 261 complete responses. InfoWorld's circulation is
220,000.

"A total of 692 individuals responded to the survey with 261 meeting all
screening criteria and qualifying to answer the entire survey.
. At the 95% confidence level the margin of error for a sample size of 261
is +/- 6.1 percentage points."

2. MiddlewareResearch surveyed 140,000 Java developers who belong to a
ServerSide J2EE list and got 1148 responses about application servers. That's
clearly a select audience, which I believe was one of the criticisms of the
XQuery survey.

"a.. 4.6 The Sample
A total of 1148 surveys were categorized as having complete results. Complete
results were accepted when 90% of the survey was filled out. The average number
of responses was 1116.5 per question. The median and mode were both 1120. The
minimum number of responses given was 1080 which was for question 23, a question
about service-oriented architectures.

This survey has a confidence interval of ±3%, at a confidence level of 95%"
