Namespace prefixes make no difference, it's the namespace URI that counts. So long as the URI is http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema you can use any namespace prefix you like. As far as I can tell, "xs" and "xsd" are equally popular. Perhaps "xsd" is used more in the Microsoft community and "xs" in the rest of the world. When I first came across this I thought that perhaps the convention was to associate "xs" with the namespace quoted above, and "xsd" with http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-datatypes. But this theory turned out to be wrong. The XMLSchema-datatypes namespace is rarely used and is best avoided because there are technical problems with it: it was supposed to be a synonym of the XMLSchema namespace, but it turns out that it isn't an exact synonym.
