XQuery is a good read-only data model for XML but a bad one as a
read-write model. I wrote about all the frustrations of trying to build
programming models around the XQuery data model at

Of course, I wouldn't expect people who've only considered the XQuery
data model for read only operations such as members of the working group
like yourself and Dana to have come across these issues.
