Thanks for the pointer.

I've tried that, and there are no characters visible that shouldn't be 
there.

Has anyone any idea on what else could be causing this?

>Look at it in a hex editor, not a unicode aware editor- unless you have an 'view octets as hex' option, a unicode aware application may be doing a conversion that your XML library isn't.
