Another helpful (if somewhat rude) answer would be RTFF: http://www.ucc.ie/xml/#attriborelem (it describes the general issues, points to Robin Cover, and quotes Mike Kay).
Ah, a quick, useful pointer from an expert, and far more effective -- and courteous -- than rolling eyes, knowing smiles, or silence. :-)
 
There is no excuse for people not doing their research, but sometimes a legitimate part of research is asking an expert a question, and then moving on from there.
 
That's part of what makes this list so valuable.
 
(please note that my comments are positive in intent, not combative. Probably this thread has run its course anyway. :-) ).
