I usually work with Corel XMetaL. It is user friendly, and was very
developer friendly too, at least up to version 3.1. Version 4.0 is
unfortunately another matter...

Though I continue to work professionally with XMetaL, I am also on the
lookout for a good editor that runs under Linux. XMLMind is a good
candidate, though I haven't used it all that much yet. The user
interface is a bit clunky. On the up side, it seems to work, and there
is a free version.
