No, it isn't interesting at all. The site breakage was related to my 
ISP misconfiguring my router, and then my DNS provider misconfiguring 
the domain mappings. The combination of the two errors meant that the 
site was visible from inside my firewall but not from outside. It had 
absolutely nothing to do with digest authentication except in so far 
as this test meant I and other people paid a little more attention to 
this server than is normal, and in the process noticed the 
preexisting breakage.
