During 1994-1995 I made my money performing security audits, penetration analysis for military and commercial networks, and I remember seeing very few Unix machines that were "hard enough" to break into. To be fair, the same was true of VMS, Mac, and Windows networks, but the point is that it is very dubious to talk of *any* network circa 1996 being "hard enough" to crack. Maybe things are different today. The people who crack networks for a living would know.
