The W3C XML Schema equivalent of the DTD (orange|apple)*, which is
what you want, is

 <xs:choice minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded">
  <xs:element name="orange" type="..."/>
  <xs:element name="apple" type="..."/>
 </xs:choice>
