OAGIS 8, www.openapplications.org, makes heavy use of substitution groups. It's the only way we found to address our extensibility requirements, both for complex nested structures and for inextensible enumerations. Substitution groups take some getting used to, but they are indeed useful. They are the closest that XML Schema comes to capturing class/instance relationships in a single inheritance model. XML Spy does an excellent job of keep track of all of the members, a job that can be bewildering at best. I haven't been encountering many W3C XML Schemas that use substitution groups. Is this because I am dealing with an unrepresentative sample, or is this a feature that is not being widely used?
