Yes they do. Implement a multi-select list in an HTML browser and compare the lines of code, the performance, and the reliability against a control in a fat client for doing the same operation. Implement drag and drop operations. In fact, most things that require going to the db for more data at the UI level are not as productively implemented or as performant in an HTML browser. To me the main problem seems to be that he might better have been using more of a multi-dimensional DBMS (say Pick), than an RDBMS.
