Well Put (in the long version), Simon, and Paul.

Here's what I see as the important take-away: "Syntax Matters".

How many times have we heard this about programming languages? That despite 
reason and peoples best efforts otherwise, syntax is still overwhelmingly 
important.

My understanding of why SGML was so complicated was acknowledgement of this 
fact. That people wouldn't accept being told what is an acceptable delimiter 
for their semi-structured data and documents. In these enlightened times, of 
course, everyone is happy to agree on angle-brackets, etc.

This also explains why XSLT has been such a successful and widely used 
technology. It embraces this truth, rather than fighting it.

Syntax Matters. People don't want to be told what GIs to use in their XML.
